May is National Foster Care Month!

Next month foster parents, relative caregivers, mentors, advocates, and social workers will come together to celebrate National Foster Care Month (NFCM).  These individuals work tirelessly for the 463,000 children who are currently in foster care to ensure they have a safe and happy life that every child deserves.  NFCM seeks to salute their great work which enables children to safely reunite with their parents, be cared for by relatives, or be adopted by loving families.  NFCM was started in 1988, initially created to recognize the selfless work of individuals who devote their time and energy to children in foster care. NFCM went on to focus on raising awareness about older children in foster care. Casey Family Programs, along with 20 organizations, coordinates the NFCM effort each year.

“We call on all Americans to do something positive that will change a lifetime for a youth in foster care in their own community. Success stories come about when someone takes the time to offer comfort, provide support, give advice, or simply share a milestone moment with a youngster enduring a difficult family situation.”  Visit www.fostercaremonth.org to learn about ways to get involved in your community!

Happy Earth Day!

One way to celebrate Earth Day is to plant trees. That is what our family is doing today. It is a great way to teach our 10 children that are still living at home the importance of the environment.

Following are some other tips on how you might celebrate Earth Day.  Some tips are not just for today, but are ways to change your lifestyle to one that is more environmentally friendly.

  • Join in on an Earth Day project near you. Check your local news outlets for what is going on in your area.
  • Support your downtown businesses. This is one way to help curb urban sprawl, which destroys wildlife habitat, farmland, and open space.
  • Buy a few large reusable shopping bags and remember to take them along when you do your grocery shopping.
  • Quit using herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers.
  • Walk instead of drive, every chance you get. As you walk, observe the life around you – birds, insects, trees, flowers, even those plants we call weeds.
